We didn't need Mera!
Hey Earthlings! I know it's been a while, I had a lot of assignments, online school is kind of a pain, I won't even lie. But today, we're not here to talk about my conflicting schedule.
*DISCLAIMER*
I really don't want my content being reported or taken down, I do realise there is a whole court case going on at the moment with my (basically) uncle Johnny Depp and she that shall not be named. So...for that purpose I will not be mentioning her real name in this blog post, I really don't want my content being reported or taken down! I do want to say, thank you for everyone that signed the petition to get her off "Aquaman", if you don't know about the petition you can just search Aquaman petitition. I actually recently checked it and it has over 1.8 million signatures and I'm sure the numbers are still rising! I'm so proud of you all, my prayers are with uncle Johnny Depp and peace for him and his family! But without further a do, let's get right into this!
Do check out my previous Aquaman post located in the Aquaman label in order to be caught up!
Let's dive right into this;
Now I'm just going to say this, I never liked Princess Mera, her character just rubbed me the wrong way. I honestly don't know what it is, I guess now I may know why but at the same time I don't know the actor personally and I know nothing about her, so realistically I have no place to straight up say I don't like her, but I'll leave that up to you guys!.
I also didn't know who she was, and honestly I've never seen her act before in anything so...
Aquaman's character;
But anyways, I honestly feel for Aquaman's first movie he shouldn't have had a love interest, or at least a grounded or established one. His character was honestly amazing but I feel there could have been so much more done for his character's struggle and even development, and to be honest, DC had a lot to work with. So I'm extremely annoyed DC didn't grasp that opportunity.
Aquaman had all this juicy back story, (no offense as this is never a situation that should be taken lightly or as a joke). A man with powers who can communicate and basically hang out with every sea creature, like how AWESOME is that!!!! But he also had this conflict with the absence of his mother as I mentioned in my previous blog post. Not knowing the whole truth of the situation and resenting her for leaving him. It would have been a mature but great addition to have him dealing with this abandonment trauma, this could have created so much more depth and separate him from some superheroes that we only know surface issues. For example balancing your normal everyday life and keeping your superhero identity secret.
It would have been nice to see either a beginning of the process of healing during the 1st movie or towards the end of the movie that would have also been carried to the next movie. It would have brought a sense of realism to this "superhero". Hey! Comment what you think, I want to know!
I will leave a link in the sidebar, under the heading "Links to Check Out", this is what I used in reference to what I will talk about briefly!
Maybe the excuse is that there wasn't much awareness for mental health back in 2018, so I'll give the writers and DC the benefit of the doubt! I have decided to leave out some information as I am well aware it may be too sensitive to add, but I will mention something that would apply to Aquaman's character!
One very big thing that I would have expected him to experience, even though I was much younger then, would have been relationship difficulties. And that's exactly where not needing Mera to be his love interest comes in!
Why we didn't need Mera;
Let me start off by saying she was basically BETHROVED to OCEAN MASTER, okay OCEAN MASTER. Her and Aquaman barely knew each other so what the hell!! I'm just happy there wasn't an odd wedding between the pair at the end of the movie.
I won't even lie Earthlings, I actually (lowkey), shipped Aquaman with Wonder Woman, I mean come on!! I can't be the only one who saw how much he admired her in "Justice League". But obviously I love Wonder Woman and wished Steve Trevor wasn't such a selfless, kind hearted man, but maybe that's a bit "CHALDISHHH", OR rather just selfish and inconsiderate of me...but ah well😅
So honestly at best his love interest or almost love interest should have been Wonder Woman, but that's just my opinion! Let me know yours!
I honestly can't say too much, but when DC takes her out of the production, I assure you it will not affect the plot of Aquaman too much as she didn't exactly have a key role in the movie...the MOVIE. But I would love to see another actor’s adaption of Mera. Maybe Scarlett Johansson aka the one an only Black Widow, possibly Zendaya, she is after all apart of the superhero FAMILY now!
That reminds me! I have a blog post and possibly series post on Black Widow coming soon! So keep a look out for that!
My Final Words;
So basically, the biggest reason as to why Aquamn didn't need a love interest, was because we needed to get to know his character first. Although I do believe the sole purpose of Mera was to please the audience and of course because she is obviously from the comics, so again for cinematic purposes, possibly to attract a specific gender or act as a role model for younger girls that may have watched the movie, and also different age groups with the different elements of the movie and plot. And guys I am in NO WAY OBJECTIFYING the actor, it's actually what I read a while ago on movies and shows, they tend to have to appeal to a certain audience. Mera would have been a great addition in the next movie though, but probably not the actor! I don't know what Aquaman 2 will be about or focus on, but I hope to see more in depth detail and some vulnerability to his character!
One last add on, was it just me that confused her for little mermaid???!!!
Signing off;
So, that's pretty much all Earthlings! I'm still re-watching season 1 of Black Lightning, so there will be a slight delay in that upcoming Tobias Wale and Khalil digest, but I'll hopefully get that out by the end of the month! I also recently started watching the CW series "The Flash", so expect some blog posts on that series.
Signing off now, got to go save the world and do some superhero stuff😀😉🦸
