Aquaman: The Flawed Superhero
Hello Earthlings! How's it going?!! I'm doing just fine actually, it's been a pretty rollercoaster last month for me but I hope everyone's doing okay and getting along fine.
"Aquaman" is honestly a personal FAV for me and I'm so happy I get to write a bit about the movie and Aquaman today. This movie is actually the 6th movie from the DC extended universe!
RIGHT! Let's get right into this!
My Initial Opinion on the movie;
Back in 2018, my friend and I went to watch "Aquaman" in the cinemas. Walking in the cinema room was quite empty to be honest. This was probably due to the fact that at the time everyone was probably still on the "let's hate DC and praise Marvel train!" Which I think is bizarre btw. But what can you do?π
Both my friend and I loved the movie, it was actually funny when it was intended to be which can sometimes be hard to achieve in movies, as the audience isn't always going to react how you think they will to certain scenes. I loved how when Aquaman spoke a language his accent was on POINT, maybe he already spoke those languages...WHO knows! My friend, who is also Russian, said his Russian accent was perfect and we said we wouldn't be surprised if he was actually Russian.
Change of opinion?
Now, I recently watched Aquaman again a couple weeks ago in February with my brother, as he never got the chance to watch it in cinemas when it first came out.
One thing that I was reminded of was how Aquaman was really, and I mean REALLY not your typical "I'm going to SAVE the world superhero", and to be honest it didn't seem like he wanted this role of being a superhero at first, I mean he was dealing with the absence of his mother, resenting her and thinking she left him, despite what his father said. The whole not wanting the title of Aquaman phase, but rather, heading to the pub with his father and chugging down pints of beer and just having fun without the whole "you have to be a RESPONSIBLE superhero and not have a life of your OWN."
First time I watched it, I just thought it was weird how he didn't save Black Manta's father, when he clearly could have. It didn't sit well the first time around with me and the second time around, watching it, I realised why.
The whole vigilante, no mercy scenario seems to be more commonly attached with DC cinematic superheroes in comparison to MCU superheroes.
I mean I wasn't expecting some deep act of heroism from a not yet superhero, (at that scene where he was phased with the marine boys and Black Manta and his crew), but I was expecting some form of a conscience or the need to do what was right no matter how much you didn't want to, whether the person you would potentially save was a "bad guy" or not. And even after the fact of Aquaman leaving Black Manta and his father behind, I mean yes he did look back, he clearly had regret written all over his face but why didn't he save Black Manta and his father in that submarine. Maybe he felt some form of conviction but something was different, it's like he had no guilt, which was different to any other DC superhero I'd seen.
HEY! Maybe it's just me, because I believe in some vague utopia and like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. But HEY that's just me right...RIGHT! Let me know your opinions in the comments, make sure I'm not the only oneπ
My Final Thoughts;
SO I thought to myself and came to this conclusion. That maybe his narrative is similar to that of a flawed hero, while being heroic he is still, in a way, subject to human error. Maybe by the end of the movie I was technically proven wrong as he became a god but STILL. Maybe if he had saved Black Manta's father, Black Manta probably wouldn't have had it in for him and feel like he had to avenge his fathers death. Both him and his father still could have gone back to their old ways but maybe they wouldn't have.. and now because of Ocean Master, Black Manta has his hands on some Atlantis rearmament, and with the special scenes at the end of the movie, it’s clear Black Manta and Dr. Stephan Shin could try and find Atlantis and expose it to the world and put Atlantis and its people in danger.
Folks! I guess we will just have to wait for "Aquaman 2" realising in 2022, to know whether or not he may just be a flawed hero that's ends up being the reason to his own downfall.
BTW, this whole FLAWED hero thing is really giving me Shakespeare vibesπ
